Unconscious biases at a coffee level - my musings.

I like my coffee long, strong and black however when the wait staff bring the coffee to the table and I am with a man, the guy receives the long black and me the flat white. What is that about?

The unconscious bias of the wait staff to assume a woman would drink a flat white and man would drink a long black happens often and I am quite bemused by this. There is the slight confusion and apologies when I say "Long black for me, thanks."

Automatic assumptions that strong, black and women for some reason do not go together rather white, creamy, soft and fluffy would suit me better or men are tough, strong and choose to drink black sometimes bitter coffee. Unconscious biases are at every level of our lives. Next time you become aware of one of your own or someone else's take note - it is no longer an unconscious bias but a conscious one which requires a deliberate action of recognition and kind correction.
